Fall is the last when you decorate your house before wanting to hibernate during the chilly winters. Have you thought what people like in cold area like Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and Cleveland do during the six months of winter they have? They decorate their houses lavishly to make them look and feel homey.
Chilly evenings means the whole family gathers for a bowl of steaming hot soup and garlic bread and getting cozy under blankets as you watch your favorite movie together and sip hot chocolate. Inspired by the Danes, we have 7 ways you make your home cozy:
1. Bake a family recipe
Craving your grandmother’s carrot cake the whole week? Head to the grocery store, purchase the ingredients, and bake the delicious with your kids. Enjoy every part of the process, even if it takes longer, and just have a fun time. Make it a family tradition to bake one homemade dessert every week in the winters.
It will not only make your house smell good but also is a great way to bond with family. You can also call your friends or sister over to bake some cookies or brownie and have a merry time in the afternoon when the kids are in school.
2. Set the mood
Light some scented candles made specifically for winters including vanilla almond, pine, cinnamon and clove, white moss, woodfire, and chestnut. Light one candle in each room. Pick the scent carefully considering the person’s personality and liking.
After the kids go to sleep, dim the lighting, play some jazz in the background, and bring out your fluffiest candle to cuddle with your partner. If you are celebrating something, light some floral candles to get rid of the winter blues.
One added benefit of decorating is that if you were thinking of moving, this can really set you up to be able to sell your home.
3. Bring out the board games
Throughout the year, you barely get time to take a break and breathe, but the speed slows down in the winters. Bring out the board games and card games that were collecting dust for the past 12 months. Host game nights for the entire family. Call your parents over, pour some wine, and have a fun time.
Have your friends over for playing board games and keep a rotating strike. One week you go to a friend’s house and then to the next one. Turn it into a tradition. It is a great way to reconnect with friends, who get lost or forgotten in the huge pile of work in the office.
4. Make a chilly weather playlist
If you can have a summer playlist, why not a winter playlist? Add songs like White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes; Winter Is Blue by Vashti Bunyan, Hazy Shade Of Winter by The Bangles, Winter Wonderland by Ray Charles, Urge For Going by Tom Rush, and I Felt The Chill Before The Winter Came by Elvis Costello along with your personal favorites.
5. Do seasonal family activities together
There are so many fun activities you can do together as a family from making apple jams to sledding. Bring out the Christmas decorations and make your house ready to welcome the festival. Take walks in your neighborhood in the evening to see the Christmas decorations put up by your neighbors.
You can take up on a big project like bedroom renovation and have all family members contribute. Select a day and take all your family for skiing. You can also take a gondola ride and take in the snowy landscape around you.
6. Host parties
You are never too old to party throughout the night. Call your friends and family over. You can watch movies together, play games, or chat for the whole time. Ask your friends to bring their favorite winter beverage with them and share with everyone attending your party.
If you are low on budget, have your friends bring in prepared dishes or ingredients for stew or a barbecue. You can meet earlier than usual and cook the feast together.
7. Make winter drinks
Whether you want to master apple cider, Irish cream, mulled wine, or hot toddies, there is no better time to learn it than during winters. All recipes are available on the internet, so keep trying and drinking until you find the best one. Modify the drinks as you like and make non-alcoholic versions for the kids.
If you are making a drink for the entire family, make a mocktail version and then add alcohol, specifically whiskey, to your glass.
Enjoy every moment of the winter season because before you know, you will sweating under the scorching sun and missing the cold days.
